She would later say that she felt she had an undeniable right to one of two things: liberty or death. "If I could not have one," she said, "I would have the other."

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in the South. It seemed as though her fate was mapped out for her at birth. After all, what difference could one poor slave girl make? But Harriet didn’t see it that way. "I'll meet you in the morning," she told her family in a coded song, "I'm bound for the promised land."

Look inside

Over the course of a decade Harriet Tubman freed not only herself, but her family and dozens of other slaves besides, leading them to freedom along the Underground Railroad. Having gained her freedom, she became friends with the leading abolitionists and suffragists of the day. She even fought in the Civil War, helping to free hundreds more who, like herself, had been born into slavery.

If you want to teach your children about the true spirit of Freedom in America, Harriet Tubman’s story is the one for you.
